I am in the process of building a keythole out of cinder block, like yours. I had a fiberglass one before, worked well for 6+ years, but cracked. I am in Texas also, so I know about the heat! I like your variation with the rebar and PVC pipe canopy. Are you able to use it as a “greenhouse?”
I’m glad to hear from a fellow keyhole gardener! I have wrapped old sheets around it before to successfully keep tender plants from freezing, but it is cumbersome to remove and reinstall the fabric to the PVC each time I need to maintain. With a little ingenuity, I suppose you could come up with a viable solution! If you do, please share it!
